Alabaster is a material that photographs better than it performs. Cut thin it glows beautifully and transmits too much; cut thick it holds its colour and transmits almost nothing. Sæt resolves that by not asking the stone to transmit at all.

The fixture is two solid discs of Spanish alabaster, the upper one dished, the lower one flat, held apart on three fine brass standoffs. The light source sits entirely within the dish of the upper disc and is invisible from every angle in the room. What the eye sees is a band of light escaping horizontally through the 6 mm gap, and the soft internal glow at the very edge of both stones where the material does finally give way.

Two alabaster discs, three brass standoffs, a six-millimetre gap.
A line of three over a counter; the source is never visible.

Because the stone is structural rather than diffusing, it can be left thick — 22 mm on the lower disc — which keeps the veining strong and the colour warm. Every fixture is different; the veining is matched between the two discs of a single pendant and not between pendants.

The electrical work is deliberately mundane. A standard replaceable module, a two-metre braided cord, a plain machined canopy. Nothing about the fitting is proprietary, and the only part of it that will ever need replacing is the part a customer can buy anywhere.

Sæt is made in three diameters and hangs alone over a table or in a line of three over a counter. It does not dim below ten percent, which we regard as a feature.
